I am a former Chemist and Engineer turned Certified Professional Resume Writer committed to helping science, engineering, technology, mathematics, IT, and healthcare/medical professionals uncover and market their unique value, credibility, and expertise in the form of targeted, branded, and evidence-based career marketing packages.
My Story
Believe it or not, it was not always my dream to become a certified professional resume writer. Before I established Scientech Resumes in 2015, I spent a number of years working as a chemist and an engineer in R&D, product development, and manufacturing environments in the US and the Netherlands.
When I first moved abroad, I experienced first hand the challenges of marketing myself and securing a job (and a visa) in a foreign country. For about two and a half months after I arrived, most of my time was spent tweaking my resume, applying for jobs, and traveling to interviews. I finally caught a break and landed a job as a product development engineer, working for a US company with a Dutch subsidiary.
I was ecstatic to secure this offer, especially since it involved more responsibility and more opportunities for travel compared to my earlier positions in R&D. Unfortunately, as I would come to find out several months later, this job looked great on paper but was absolute hell in the day to day. I can recall several Fridays where I would go home for the weekend and collapse from exhaustion due to the chaotic and toxic environment. By the time Sunday afternoon would roll around, I could feel my anxiety creeping in, knowing that it would start again the next day for 5 days in a row.
I stayed in this job for 2 years. During that period, I constantly struggled to try and find some sense of inspiration or engagement in what I was doing. On top of that, I was overworked, chronically stressed, and emotionally and physically exhausted. I became more and more pessimistic and cynical with each passing day. Before too long, I was hating my job, losing my patience and temper with co-workers, and feeling demoralized by the company’s leadership and culture. While I tried to find ways to engage myself in my work and create value for the company, my ability to exert control over my job was vastly constrained.
I didn’t like the person I was becoming. The stress and overwhelm from my job drifted into my personal life, causing problems between my partner and I. That’s when I knew it was time to do something different. My health and overall well-being depended on it.
Turning the corner
I started to lay the groundwork for my next move, which ultimately led me to my resume writing and job search consulting practice. About a year into my engineering job, I began exploring my writing talents by writing professional resumes on a freelance basis. Little did I know, this experience would ignite my desire to help people on a more personal level find fulfilling work that supported their strengths and becoming the best versions of themselves.
Since returning to the US and establishing Scientech Resumes LLC, I have dedicated my resume writing and job search consulting practice to support job seekers in science, technology (including IT), engineering, mathematics (STEM), and healthcare and medical sectors identify and market their unique value, and re-establish that first impression they make in front of prospective employers.
